A Championship Tradition
The Ames High School boys and girls basketball programs share a rich tradition of success.
The boys have won nine state championships (1936, 1945, 1955, 1973, 1976, 1991, 2009 and 2010, 2022) including back-to-back undefeated state championship seasons in 2008-2009 and 2009-2010, and seen five players make rosters in the NBA.

The girls have made the state tournament in 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010 and were among the state's most dominant girls teams in the early 2000s. Since girls basketball began at Ames High School in the 1970s, the Little Cyclones have made it to state seven times, finished as state runner-up in 2009, and won seven conference championships.
